Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

Description

The research prize offered by former executive board members and institute directors of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is awarded in recognition of outstanding scientific work by staff of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in the domain of “human-centered technology” (Technik für den Menschen). The prize-winning work is expected to make a significant contribution to the quality of life, enabling people to remain fit and active in their daily lives up to an advanced age and improving the immediate environment in which they live. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros and is awarded biennially, in alternation with the Stifterverband science prize.

A laser for nanomedicine
A modified femtosecond laser can correct poor eyesight and identify malignant melanomas. In addition, it represents an effective tool for laser nanomedicine: It can be used for example to drill nanoholes in cellular membranes and to transfer genes into cells by means of light.
