The late Dr Max Jacobs was one of Australia's most distinguished foresters. At the time of his retirement in 1970 he was the Director-General of the Forestry and Timber Bureau having worked in the public service for 44 years. He died in Canberra in 1979.
In 1983 the Australian Academy of Science in conjunction with the Institute of Foresters of Australia and the New Zealand Institute of Foresters established a fund to commemorate his life and work. The fund is used to support worthy projects in any field of forestry research and to provide graduates within Australasia with support not readily available from other sources.
