Buchanan Medal

Description

Originally awarded every five years in respect of distinguished services to Hygienic Science or Practice in the direction of either original research or of professional, administrative or constructive work, without limit of nationality or sex.

This award is now made biennially (in even years) in recognition of distinguished contribution to the medical sciences generally.

Recipients

2004 winner : The 2004 Buchanan Medal was awarded to Sir David Lane FRS, in recognition of his discovery of the p53 protein and the subsequent research in which this basic discovery has been followed through to clinical application, exploiting the p53 pathway to find new treatments for cancer.
