This research award was donated by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany on the occasion of his state visit to Japan in 1978. It is awarded annually to a Japanese academic for outstanding services to enhancing mutual understanding of culture and society in Germany and Japan. The scientist or scholar should be under 50 years of age and have a working knowledge of German. The award-winner will also be invited to spend up to a year researching in Germany. The prize is valued at 50,000 EUR.
Apart from the presidents of Japanese universities, the right of nomination lies with former Siebold award winners, the heads of the Goethe Institutes in Japan and of the German Institute for Japanese Studies, as well as the German Ambassador in Tokyo and the German Consul General in Osaka. Humboldt fellows and award-winners may make nominations via the Vice Chancellor of a Japanese university. A decision on the award is made by a special committee under the chairmanship of the German Ambassador in Japan. Self-nominations are not accepted.
