McNeil Medal

Description

The McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science was established in 1991 through the generosity of McNeil Consumer Healthcare. It is intended to highlight the important role that science plays within our society and to encourage the communication of science to students and the public.

The medal is awarded to a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding ability to promote and communicate science to students and the public within Canada (the term public is defined in its broadest sense). The bronze medal and a cash amount of $1,500 are awarded every year if there is a suitable candidate.

The selection committee consists of one Fellow from the Academy of the Arts and Humanities, one from the Academy of Social Sciences, two from the Academy of Sciences, a non-voting representative from McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a representative from the pre-university education milieu and one from the communications media, appointed at the committee’s discretion. Each committee member shall serve for three years and the Academy of Sciences shall appoint the Chair.
