Language, Interaction, and Culture in Political Arenas and Everyday Life : The role of language in defining agency, mitigating conflict, and organizing social encounters, with special attention to how specific linguistic forms and discourse strategies participate in the social construction of hierarchy, intentionality and truth (Projects: Public speaking and politics in Samoa and in the US; everyday encounters in Samoa and the U.S.)

Multilingualism & Multiculturalism : The use of different ways of speaking and acting in the daily life of Samoan families in Samoa and in the U.S. (Projects: Code switching and borrowing among Samoan families in the US; Code switching and borrowing in (Western) Samoa and American Samoa, with special attention to the differences between everyday interaction and institutional settings, including the language of the media).

History of Linguistic Anthropology in the United States: Past and Current Paradigms : The social and intellectual conditions that promoted the birth of the field of linguistic anthropology in the U.S. Theoretical and methodological implications for anthropology and related fields. Paradigm shifts in contemporary linguistic anthropology.

He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the UCLA Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award, and the American Anthropological Association/Mayfield Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.
