Professor in Civil Engineering and Adjunct Professor in the Department of City Planning (Transportation) at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Engineering, Canada.
Through a thirty-five years professional career, Alan Clayton has worked as an academic, consultant, regulator, traffic engineer, and researcher — throughout Canada, in the United States, and abroad in Sweden, Ghana, Thailand, and the United Kingdom in the area of transportation engineering and planning.
In 2000, Alan Clayton was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Manitoba Public Insurance Corporation in recognition of his commitment and contribution to road safety.
In 2005, he was the first Canadian awarded the Wilbur Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the transportation profession by relating academic studies to the actual practice of transportation.
In 2006, he was appointed a Member Emeritus of the Committee on Motor Vehicle Size and Weight(AT055), by the U.S. Transportation Research Board of the National Academies.
He is a registered professional engineer in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, various committees of the U.S. Transportation Research Board and the Transportation Association of Canada, the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, and the Canadian Institute of Geomatics.
