Professor Leon-Garcia is a leader in the research of the design, operation, and management of emerging application-oriented multiservice packet networks.

He has influenced electrical and computer engineering as well as telecommunications education nationally and internationally.

Current Research Interests
- Next-Generation Router for the Emergent Internet (CFI Leading Edge Fund Proposal): they are designing and building a new flexible and programmable router that will form the basis for a national Canadian testbed for research in new network architectures and applications.
- Impact of P2P on Control Plane (Bell Canada): they are investigating the application of P2P self-management mechanisms in service provider control architectures to produce a more agile, flexible, and cost-effective infrastructure.
- Service Overlay Networks (NSERC Strategic Grant): they are investigating multi-server, multi-path multimedia streaming approaches in service overlay networks.
- Autonomic Service Architecture (Canada Research Chair): they are developing an Autonomic Service Architecture that will enable automated management of resources in service and application delivery. they will use ASA to control the creation of a multiplicity of overlay networks in the national testbed for the Emergent Internet.
- Packet Switching with Photonic-Based Label Processing (Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations): they are developing and implementing optical switch architectures exploiting new all-optical label-processing systems.
- Network Tomography (NSERC Discovery Grant): they have developmed new measurement methods assessing and tracking path quality in Internet using queueing theoretic estimation approaches. they are developing measurement-driven methods for traffic management.

Patents

A. Leon-Garcia and I. Widjaja, Output-Buffered Packet Switch with a Flexible Buffer Management Scheme, U.S. Patents #5,274,642, #5,406,556, and #5,440,553, 1992. These patents disclose how an output-buffered switch can be implemented using the repeated application of identical "column-filling" operation. Each column fill operation can be performed by an identical piece of hardware. A distributed switch architecture is obtained by a tandem arrangement of column-fill modules. A centralized switch architecture is also possible by using the distributed switch to control the reading and writing out of a shared memory.
