Aegean archaeology with specific focus on prehistory; Mediterranean cultural and environmental dynamics from earliest prehistory to the present; comparative island archaeology; field survey and landscape archaeology; method and theory.

Current fieldwork :
Director of the Kythera Island Project, an inter-disciplinary research programme focussing on the analysis of insular dynamics on the Aegean island of Kythera.

KIP is centred on an intensive field survey but also involves a range of other fields and expertise widely based in the UK and abroad; within the field of prehistory a dominant theme is the interpretation of minoanisation. Current and recent PhD supervision includes the archaeology and conservation of Minoan gypsum, the social dynamics of burial in LM II-III Crete, the archaeology of copper production on Cyprus, stone vessels and the creation of value regimes in the Aegean and east Mediterranean, metal vessels in the Aegean and Anatolia, Aegean Bronze Age costumes and the impact of textiles on pottery decoration, the archaeology of colonialism in the Philippines, island archaeology in the Scilly Isles (Cornwall), archaeometallurgy of the Early Bronze Age Cyclades, island archaeology in the central Mediterranean, gender and Aegean Neolithic figurines, the social archaeology of stone quarrying in Old Kingdom Egypt, and physical anthropology (through dental analysis) of the prehistoric Canary Islanders.
