Professor, Associate Director
Research School of Earth Sciences
The Australian National University
Canberra, Australia.
Hugh´s groundbreaking experimental studies of the stability and structure of earth materials are legendary.
He has accomplished a vast achievement of quantifying the thermodynamics of earth materials with a great range of techniques. The implications of his work have been felt in the solid earth sciences in answering questions of the stability of phases in the deep earth.
Further, his development of new techniques for extracting thermochemical data from experiments have been astonishingly successful. He has exploded myths in the literature of the Earth sciences through his erudite attention to critical aspects of the origin and evolution of the Earth and Moon.
He is the world´s foremost scholar in the application of mineralogy and petrology to constraining our picture of the Earth´s interior.
He was awarded a Forschungspreis by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Stiftung in 2000, which has enabled him to return to Germany three times for collaborative visits. He was presented with the Schlumberger medal of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 2003, the Bunsen Medal of the European Union of Geosciences in 2007, and the Bowen medal of the American Geophysical Union also in 2007. He was elected a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America in 2006, of the Geochemical Society in 2007, and became a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences in 2008.
