Founder of the Institute of Human Origins in Berkeley.
Paleoanthropologist who has discovered in 1974 a 3.18 million year old hominid skeleton - popularly known as "Lucy" - in the Hadar region of Ethiopia. He also found the "First Family", a unique collection of 13 individuals who died in a single geological moment.
His research, carried out in Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Tanzania. Fieldwork at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania laid the discovery, in 1986, of a 1.8 million year old partial skeleton of Homo habilis and, in 1992, to the discovery of the first complete skull of Luch's species, Australopithecus afarensis.
Honorary Board Member of the Explorers Club, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and many other professional organizations; and recipient of several international prizes and awards.
