He is a Director of the Institute for Development Anthropology, and has served as an adviser to the National Academy of Sciences, Overseas Development Council, US Office of Technology Assessment, United Nations Development Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, UN Environmental Programme, World Bank, Agency for International Development, and World Conservation Union.

Professor of Anthropology, is a social anthropologist whose research focuses on the intersections of human rights, economic development, and environmental sustainability. A specialist on river-basin development, natural resources management, food production systems, and semiarid and island ecosystems, he has carried out research among pastoral herders, farmers, and fishers in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Sudan, Zaire, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Tunisia, Israel, Vietnam, Jamaica, and Martinique.

Prix et récompenses

2000 Solon T. Kimball Award for Public and Applied Anthropology for his contributions in establishing the field of development anthropology and for his work on improving the lives of pastoral herders and riparian peoples in developing countries.
