Leakey is the second of three sons born to anthropologists Mary and Louis Leakey, who discovered fossils leading to the understanding of human origins.

His most famous discovery was, in 1984, that of Turkana Boy, a nearly complete skeleton of a 9-year-old hominid who died 1.5 million years ago. The following year supplied another major find, WT 17000, the first skull of the species Australopithecus aethiopicus.

More recently Leakey has played a prominent role in politics and conservation in East Africa.
