Her major research areas are on the human Immunoglobulin and T cell Receptor genes (chromosomes 2, 7, 14 and 22), clinical applications and therapeutical approaches (antibody engineering). Contribution in genome research includes molecular genetics of the IGH locus, complete characterization of the human T cell Receptor Gamma locus, cloning of the human CTLA-4 gene, complete mapping of the human lambda IGL locus (1995). More than 40 genomic probes are released by HGRC, UK, JCRB, Japan and ATCC, USA.

Marie-Paule Lefranc is initiator and coordinator of the International ImMunoGeneTics database, IMGT, created in 1989 and on the Web since July 1995.
