He received a Fields Medal in 1994 for solving the Restricted Burnside Problem, a fundamental algebraic conjecture that mathematicians specializing in group theory had been working on throughout the 20th century.
He received the Fields Medal in 1994. Other honors include the College de France Medal in 1992 and the Andre Aizenstadt Prize in 1996. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences at the early age of 45. He is an editor or on the editorial board of more than 10 major mathematics journals, including The Annals of Mathematics, The Journal of Algebra and The Journal of the American Mathematical Society.
