Dr. Barlow's current research, funded by NASA, includes using Mars Global Surveyor data to investigate the distribution of subsurface water and ice on Mars. Recent research has also included analyzing impact craters on Mercury to determine if subsurface ice caps are indicated and identifying possible source craters for martian meteorites. She also has been involved in landing site characterization studies for the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Surveyor 2001 missions
