Research Associate, Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London, UK.
Alessandra's research interests include:
Multiscale mechanics of bone
Bone fracture
Bone adaptation to mechanical loads
Computational modelling of bone growth
Imaging analysis of bone structure
Alessandra received her master degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2005 from the Politecnico di Milano. For her final year dissertation, she conducted experimental tests on shoulder prosthesis under the supervision of Professor Patrick Prendergast at the Centre for Bioengineering of Trinity College Dublin. In this lab, she was then appointed research assistant for 6 months, conducting computational research on shoulder prosthesis. In October 2005, she joined Imperial College London for a PhD in musculoskeletal biomechanics which Alessandra was awarded in 2009. During her doctoral studies, Alessandra worked under the supervision of Dr Sandra Shefelbine and investigated the relationship between gait abnormalities and bone deformities in children with cerebral palsy, using gait analysis, inverse dynamics and finite element modeling.
Since then Alessandra has been working as a Research Associate at Imperial College, focusing her research on the multiscale mechanics of bone and on the mechanobiology of bone. In summer 2009, she was a visiting scientist at ETH Zurich, and in collaboration with Professor Ralph Muller, she investigated the ultra-structure of osteogenesis imperfecta bone using synchrotron radiation tomography. In 2010 she was awarded the prestigious Global research award from the Royal Academy of Engineering and she went to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she was a postdoctoral research fellow in the lab of Professor Robert Ritchie and investigated the fracture mechanics of osteogenesis imperfecta bone.
