Doctor Hans Hagemann received his PhD in 1984 at the University of Geneva. From 1985 to 1986, he stayed as a post-doc at the University of Calfornia at Berkeley in the group of Herbert L. Strauss. He returned in 1987 to the University of Geneva as a research assistant, and was promoted in 1989 to a Senior Lecturer.
Doctor Hagemann teaches electrochemistry within the frame of the course on physical chemistry I (thermodynamics). Particular focus is being placed on developing laboratory experiments, and teaching safety procedures in chemical laboratories.
The research of Doctor Hagemann concentrates on the study of the structural and optical spectroscopic properties of inorganic compounds, in order to characterise the effect of a physical and chemical pressure (e.g. by ion substitution within the crystal matrix) to specifically optimise emission properties. Specific experiments currently under way involve Eu(II) and Sm(II) luminescence in fluorides.
Another theme of interest is the application of vibrational spectroscopy, on the one hand to study the properties of potential storage materials for hydrogen (in collaboration with Prof. K. Yvon), and on the other hand to compare experimental measurements and theoretical calculations of spectra by means of the DFT approach.
In 1983, he received the Philippe-Auguste-Guye-Prize of the University of Geneva.
