Dr Kemper\'s primary field is astromineralogy, the formation and evolution of dust and ice particles in astrophysical environments. Relying predominantly on infrared spectroscopy obtained with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope and ESA’s Infrared Space Observatory, the composition of these grains can be determined, and their evolution is followed from the formation in stellar winds, into the interstellar medium, until incorporation into planets around young stars. So far, she has focussed mainly on the evolution of oxygen-rich dust, in particular she investigates which processes cause crystallization and amorphization of silicates in various astrophysical environments. Her most influential contribution to this field is the determination of the degree of crystallinity in the diffuse interstellar medium, from which she determined the amorphization rate of dust in stellar ejecta due to cosmic rays. In addition, she currently plays an important role within the Spitzer Legacy project SAGE, where she is the leading investigator on the spectroscopy section. She also was the first to detect carbonates in astrophysical environments, specifically in Planetary Nebulae, a discovery which is now put into a broader astrophysical perspective by the discovery of carbonates in the ejecta from comet Tempel 1 caused by the impact of NASA’s Deep Impact probe.
