Regulation and modulation of NO production

Ignarro discovered that nitric oxide (NO) relaxes vascular smooth muscle; inhibits platelet aggregation; is a neurotransmitter mediating erectile function; is responsible for the action of nitroglycerin in vascular smooth muscle, where it activates guanylate cyclase by heme-dependent mechanisms; and is identical with endothelium-derived relaxing factor.

1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery concerning nitric oxide as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system.
