History

>The Albanians are reputedly descendants of Illyrian and Thracian tribes that settled the region in ancient times.
>358 B.C. : Illyrians are defeated by Philip II of Macedonia.
>165 B.C. : The Illyrians are under Roman control.
>395 : After the division of the Roman Empire, Albania passed to Byzantinium.
>4th-7th century : Goths, Huns, Avars, Serbs, Croats and Bulgars successively invade Illyrian lands.
>1014-1204 : Southern Albania remains in the Byzantine Empire.
>1204 : Venice wins control over most of Albania.
>1272 : Charles I of Naples is proclaimed king of Albania.
>14th cent. : the Serbs conquere most of the country.
>15th cent. : The Turks begin their conquests.
>17th-78th : About two-thirds of Albanians convert to Islam.
>1877-78 : Treaty of San Stefano, signed after Russo-Turkish War, assigned Albanian-populated lands to Bulgaria, Montenegro and Serbia ; but Austria-Hungary and Britain block the treaty's implementation.
>1912 : The first of the Balkan Wars gives the Albanians an opportunity to proclaim their independance.
>1913 : Treaty of Bucharest ends Second Balkan War. Great Powers recognize an independant Albanian State. Demographics are ignored and, however, half of the territories inhabited by Albanians (such as Kosova and Chameria) are divided among Montenegro, Serbia and Greece.
>During the World War I, secret treaties called for Albania's dismembrement but Albanian resistance and the principle of self-determination as promoted by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson helped to restore an independant Albania.
>1920 : Tirana becomes the capital of Albania.
>1939 : Mussolini's troops invade and occupy Albania.
>1944 : The Communist Enver Hoxha and his partisans seizes most of Albania. In 1946, Hoxha becomes prime minister.
>1955-1968 : Albania is a founding member of the Warsaw Pact, until the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
>1976 : Albania becomes a "people'socialist republic".
>1985 : Enver Hoxha dies. Ramiz Alia is his successor.
>1990 : Alia and his government begin to Allow tourism and promote foreign trade.
>1998 : Albania is flooded with refugees from neighboring Kosovo.
