- Solar Radiation Monitoring
- Solar Systems Analysis

Dr. Vliet's general areas of research are heat and mass transfer and solar energy systems. Dr. Vliet is a past faculty member of the Thermal/Fluid Systems program of the Mechanical Engineering Department, and served on the College of Engineering faculty since 1971. His Solar Lab performed solar radiation measurements across the state, maintained the Texas solar radiation database (TSRDB), and conducted important other solar energy research.

Currently, he directs the Texas Solar Radiation Database project which includes 15 solar monitoring stations across Texas that are phone-linked to the solar energy laboratory. He has also worked extensively in convective and 2-phase heat transfer, solar thermal applications (water heating, aborption cooling, etc) and photovoltaic systems. His teaching areas are thermodynamics, heat transfer, energy systems and solar energy systems.
